Ashes Fifth Test The OvalThe fifth and final Ashes test will be played as usual at the Brit Oval, the scene of many famous moments in Ashes history. The Oval is the home of Surrey County Cricket club and has a ground capacity of 23,000. It was at the Oval where the very first England v Australia test match took place in 1882. That match, won by Australia was effectively to begin the legend of the Ashes, see Ashes history for further details.

In the 2005 Ashes test series the match at the Oval was drawn but will be remembered as the ground where England regained the Ashes after a break of 18 years. It was also a memorable test for the amount of centuries scored. England scored two, Andrew Strauss in the first innings and Kevin Pietersen in the second. Australia scored two centuries, both coming from the openers, Matthew Haydon and Justin Langer. But the star of the test was undoubtedly, Shane Warne who took 12 wickets in the match.

In recent matches between the two sides at the Oval it is England who have faired the better. Those results have been:

  • 2005 Match Drawn
  • 2001 Australia won by Innings and 25 runs
  • 1997 England won by 19 runs
  • 1993 England won by 161 runs
  • 1989 Match drawn
  • 1985 England won by an Innings and 94 runs
